Annual herb from a taproot; stems simple to few-branched, spreading stiff-hairy and also with shorter, softer, downswept hairs, 10-60 cm tall.
Basal leaves often crowded, larger than stem leaves, which are linear to linear-oblong, to 12 cm long and to 1 cm wide, alternate, entire.
Inflorescence a coiled cluster; petals orange or orange-yellow with vermilion markings in the open throat, fused into a tube 5-8 mm long that spreads (1.5-3 mm wide) at top to 5 short lobes; calyx lobes 5, hairy.
Nutlets 4, clustered together, 2-3 mm long, egg-shaped, pimply and often wrinkled

Habitat / Range

Dry roadsides, fields and disturbed areas in the steppe zone; rare in SC BC, known only from the Kelowna area; S to UT and CA.
