General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stems erect, several, simple or few-branched, 15-40 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves numerous, tufted, oblanceolate to spoon-shaped, 1.5-4 cm long, soon deciduous; stem leaves opposite, 2-4 pairs, narrowly lanceolate to oblanceolate, 1.5-5 cm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 1 to few terminal or axillary flowers on long, naked stalks; corollas deep blue or purplish, tubular, 4-lobed, sometimes 3-lobed, the lobes minutely jagged and with a few slender lateral teeth, rounded at the tips, not fringed in the throat, 3.5-5.5 mm long; calyces 15-25 mm long, 1/2 the length of the corollas, the lobes pointed and subequal; stamens shorter than the corolla lobes; anthers 3-4 mm long.
Fruits:
Capsules, cylindric; seeds oblong, angular, wingless, finely pimpled, dark-brown, 0.5 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Wet to moist fens, meadows and streamsides in the montane zone; rare in SE BC, known only from Field and Wapta Falls; N to YT and NT, E to PQ and S to MN and SD.
