Species Information

General:
Annual or biennial herb from a taproot; stems erect, leafy, 10-30 cm tall, essentially glabrous.
Leaves:
Leaves mainly of the stems, narrowly elliptic, more or less entire, sharp-pointed, essentially glabrous.
Flowers:
Inflorescence short, forming a dense rounded cluster; petals unlike, the lower or outer ones much larger than the 2 upper ones, mauve to purple, sometimes whitish.
Fruits:
Silicles, strongly compressed at right angles to the inner partitions, beaked, 1- to 2-seeded; segments keeled, wings prolonged upwards into triangular, long-pointed lobes equal to or exceeding the segments.

Habitat and Range

Dry roadsides and waste places in the lowland zone; rare in SW BC, known only from Nanoose Bay area; introduced from Europe.
