General:
Annual herb; stems usually erect, 20-50 cm tall, slender, narrowly winged to wingless, glabrous.
Leaves:
Alternate, pinnately compound with 2 leaflets; leaflets linear to narrowly elliptic, 3-6 cm long; lower leaves bristle-tipped, upper ones with well-developed tendrils; stipules 2-lobed, linear to narrowly lanceolate, about 1/4 the length of the leaflets, the upper lobe twice as long as the lower.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of solitary, stalked, axillary, pea-like flowers with the axis extending beyond the stalk as a bristle or tendril; corollas orange-red, about 10 mm long, the banner-claw about as long as the blade; calyces 5-8 mm long, the linear-lanceolate teeth usually longer than the tube.
Fruits:
Pods, 3-6 cm long, 3-5 mm wide, glabrous, longitudinally grooved; seeds 10 to 26.
