Family Description:
Members of this family are simple, bifurcate, dichotomously branched, or proliferous blades or sacs. The medulla is composed of large, globose cells (no filaments). Reproduction is as described for the order.
Species description:
Frilly Red Ribbon is much more highly branched than the other two species of Palmaria covered here. Its regularly dichotomous blades remind one immediately of a species of Callophyllis, hence the specific epithet (callophylloides means "like Callophyllis").
Frilly Red Ribbon often grows with Ribbon Kelp (Alaria marginata), and is one of our most attractive algae.
