General:
Perennial herb from a taproot with a stem-base clothed with brown decaying leaf bases; stems erect, simple, bristly-hairy, (16) 20-40 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves 8-20 cm long, the stalks two-thirds the leaf length, deeply dissected into lanceolate or strap-shaped segments, with 3-4 pairs of primary lateral lobes, nearly smooth or white bristly-hairy above, grey-green below, green above, stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of solitary flowers on bristly-hairy stalks; petals red, white or yellow, 15-30 mm long.
Fruits:
Capsules, nearly round to ellipsoid, conspicuously ribbed, 10-15 mm long, 1.5-2.5 times longer than wide, bristly-hairy, the hairs ivory-coloured.
