General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stems simple or few-branched, spreading stiff-hairy and also with softer, often downswept hairs, 10-60 cm tall.

Leaves:
Basal leaves persistent, often crowded; stem leaves linear to oblong or oblanceolate, to 10 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, alternate, entire.

Flowers:
Inflorescence a coiled cluster; petals yellow to orange, fused basally into a tube 6-9 mm long that spreads (3-6 mm wide) at the top to 5 stubby lobes; calyx lobes 5, with both silky and longer, stiff hairs.

Fruits:
Nutlets 4, clustered together, 2.5-3 mm long, egg-shaped, warty, greenish to dark brown.
