General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stem simple to much-branched, somewhat flimsy, sparingly spreading stiff-hairy, without shorter softer hairs except often in the inflorescence, 15-80 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves not forming a persistent tuft; stem leaves lance-oblong, elliptic, or linear, 2-12 cm long and 0.5-2.5 cm wide, alternate, entire.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a coiled cluster; petals yellow, fused into a tube 4-7 mm long that spreads (2-4 mm wide) at top to 5 shallow lobes, the throat open; calyx lobes 5, with both silky and longer, stiff hairs.
Fruits:
Nutlets 4, clustered together, 2-3.5 mm long, egg-shaped, warty or pimply and often wrinkled, greenish or grey to brownish-black.
