General:
Perennial herb from a vertical or ascending rhizome; stems erect, 1 or more, 10-35 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal, 1 or 2 or absent, ascending, 3-parted, the leaflets 2.5-6 cm long, coarsely toothed on the upper 1/2 to 2/3, tips pointed, lateral leaflets sometimes lobed, soft-hairy or smooth; stalks 10-20 cm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a solitary, terminal flower; flower stalks soft-hairy above; involucral bracts 3, leaf-like, stalked, similar to basal leaves; petals absent; sepals 5 to 7, petal-like, white, rarely pinkish, elliptic egg-shaped to egg-shaped, 8-20 mm long, 6-8 mm wide, smooth; stamens 35-55 (90).
Fruits:
Achenes, several in a nearly spheric head on stalks 2-5 cm long, the achenes ellipsoid to egg-shaped, 3-4 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, not winged, soft-hairy; beaks straight or slightly curved, 0.5-1 mm long, smooth or minutely-hairy near attachment.
