General:
Perennial herb from rhizomes; stems slender, leafy, 15-60 cm tall, brownish- to reddish-hairy, often glandular-hairy.
Leaves:
Basal and lower stem leaves long-stalked, heart- to kidney-shaped, 2-8 cm wide, 5- to 7-cleft to about 1/2 their length, 2- to 3-times sharply-toothed, the teeth bristle-tipped; upper stem leaves unstalked; stipules slightly winged with several, long brownish bristles.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a terminal, open, compound panicle, the stalks reddish, densely glandular; flowers slightly irregular; petals white, 5-6 mm long, spoon-shaped to oblanceolate, short-clawed, deciduous; calyces 4-5 mm long, top- to urn-shaped, lobed about 1/3 length into narrowly lance-shaped segments, the lobes smooth, the base attached to ovary, glandular; stamens 5, shorter than sepals; pistils solitary, the ovary over 1/2 inferior.
Fruits:
Capsules, beaked; seeds black, minutely spiny.

Habitat / Range

Moist woodlands, meadows and streambanks in the lowland and montane zones; frequent on Vancouver Island and the adjacent mainland; S to CA.
