Summary:
Subgenus Phlegmacium. Features of Cortinarius badiolatus include a dark brown, viscid cap, clay-brown to light rust-brown gills, a stem with a sharply differentiated veil covering, the lower half colored as the cap, flesh having a bright yellow alkali reaction, and growth under conifers. The description is derived from Moser(1). This may be a synonym of Cortinarius durus (q.v.).

Harrower(1) assigned a BC collection sequence 45 to Cortinarius badiolatus, and it is also found in Europe. If C. badiolatus is a synonym of Cortinarius durus, then C. durus is present in BC; in any case, the collection falls within a clade that includes Cortinarius durus, (D. Miller, pers. comm.). Morphological correlation is desirable.

5-8cm across, dark date-brown to chestnut or dark copper brown

Gills:
clay-brown to light rust brown

Stem:
lower half dark date-brown to chestnut or dark copper brown; with sharply delineated veil covering

Microscopic spores:
spores 10-12 x 5-6 microns
