General: Deciduous perennial from a long creeping rhizome.
Leaves: Thin, 3-15 cm long, from deeply pinnately lobed to 2-pinnate, segments of sterile leaves oblong, egg-shaped to fan-shaped; fertile leaves only slightly differentiated from the sterile ones, their segments narrower than in sterile leaves.
Wet crevices in calcareous rocks from the steppe and montane to alpine zones; infrequent throughout BC; circumpolar, N to AK, YT and NT, E to AB and S to CO, UT, NV and OR, disjunct to ON and NF and S to ME, NH, PA, WV, IL and IA; N Eurasia.
