General:
Perennial herb from short, scaly stolon; stems 8-35 cm tall, usually simple, clumped, glabrous with white bloom.
Leaves:
Narrowly lanceolate to egg-shaped, 1-3.4 cm long, 7-18 mm wide, entire to finely toothed, glabrous with white bloom; more or less unstalked, clasping.
Flowers:
Inflorescence erect, terminal; hypanthium 0.7-2.3 mm long; petals 2.5-7 mm long, pink to rose-purple, sometimes white, notched at tip; sepals 1.6-4.0 mm long; anthers 0.5-1 mm long; ovaries 1-3.4 cm long, sparsely short stiff-hairy sometimes with glandular hairs; styles 2.2-3.6 mm long; stigmas club-shaped.
Fruits:
Capsules, 2-5.5 cm long, linear, usually curved, sometimes sparsely hairy; stalks 5-17 mm long; seeds 0.8-1.3 mm long, pimply in lengthwise rows.

Moist streambanks, rocky slopes, and open forests in the montane to alpine zones; rare in S BC; E to AB and S to MT, UT and CA.
