General:
Perennial herb from a taproot; stems erect or decumbent at base, 5-30 cm tall, slender, simple or branched, often reddish, hairy or glabrous except for decurrent lines of hairs from the leaf bases, with fleshy winter bulblets at the base; young vegetative buds often present in leaf axils.
Leaves:
Mostly opposite, lanceolate to lance-oblong or elliptic, 0.5-4 cm long, 2-13 mm wide, blunt to pointed at base, tapering to blunt tip, finely toothed, glabrous or hairy on the margins; short-stalked.
Flowers:
Inflorescence nodding to almost erect, few-flowered, terminal, short appressed-hairy; petals 2-6 mm long, whitish to pink; sepals 1-4 mm long, glabrous to short-hairy; stigmas broadly club-shaped.
Fruits:
Capsules, 1-5 cm long, more or less glabrous; seeds 0.8-1 mm long, pimply in parallel lines, tuft of hairs tawny, 3-6 mm long, persisting.

Habitat / Range

Moist meadows and streambanks in the montane to alpine zones; rare throughout BC; N to AK and S to MT, ID and OR.
