General:
Perennial evergreen herb from a short, slender, brownish rhizome.
Stems:
3-20 cm tall, 1-1.5 mm thick, kinked, without a central cavity, not branched, the sheaths with 3 teeth, the teeth dark with white margins.
Cones:
0.5-1 cm long, with a pointed tip at the top.

Habitat / Range

Dry to wet coniferous forests, peat bogs, fens, swamps, and alpine tundra, from the montane to alpine zones; frequent in BC in and east of the Coast-Cascade Mountains; circumpolar, N to AK, YT and NT, E to NF and S to CT, NY, MI, WI, IL, SD, ID and WA; Eurasia.
