General:
Perennial herb from scaleless stem-bases with many bulblets; stems 10-35 cm tall, smooth to lightly hairy below, glandular-hairy above, the glands yellow.
Leaves:
Basal leaves several, heart- to kidney-shaped, 1-4 cm wide, deeply 3-lobed, toothed, the teeth coarse and rounded, nearly smooth, somewhat fleshy, the stalks stout, 3-11 cm long; stem leaves similar or reduced and narrower, 4 to 9, alternate, the stalks reduced; stipules of stem leaves enlarged, particularly upwards.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a many-flowered terminal cluster, somewhat flat-topped; petals white or purplish-tinged at base, 2-4 mm long, egg-shaped to oblanceolate, spreading, entire, not clawed, persistent; calyces top-shaped, joined partly to ovary, the lobes triangular-lanceolate, 1-3 mm long, spreading, the tips slightly bent back; stamens 5, opposite the calyx lobes.
Fruits:
Capsules, about 4 mm long; seeds brown, about 0.6 mm long, warty.

Habitat / Range

Moist mossy, rock outcrops and ledges in the montane and subalpine zones; infrequent in S BC, rare in coastal BC, absent on the Queen Charlotte Islands; E to AB and S to MT, ID and N CA.
