Midget quillwort is found in North America only in Washington State and British Columbia ({ah}//plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=ISMI4USDA 2010{/a}). In British Columbia, it is reported from Castlegar and Salmo, where it was collected by Adolf Ceska. Ceska and Ceska (2001) provide the following information for this species: “Isoetes minima differs from I. howellii by having small, spiny megaspores and by sporangia that completely lack velum. Megaspores of Isoetes howellii have low ridges and its sporangia have partial velum.....Isoetes minima was described from a single collection made by Wilhelm Suksdorf from Spangle near Spokane, WA, and until recently, the only authentic material of this taxon has been the type specimen."
