General:
Perennial herb from long creeping rhizomes; stems erect, 10-30 cm tall.

Leaves:
Located on the lower part of the stem, flat, stiff, lacking cross-walls.

Flowers:
Inflorescence of 1 to 3 terminal heads of 5 to 15 flowers, the flowers lacking bractlets; perianth segments dark brown with wide green midribs, 4-6 mm long, egg-shaped, pointed or awned; stamens 6; anthers 1-1.6 mm long, about equal to the filaments; lowest bracts leaflike, longer than the inflorescence, the upper bracts awnlike and shorter than the inflorescence.

Fruits:
Capsules, egg-shaped, blunt or notched, equal to or slightly shorter than the perianth segments, dark; seeds wedge-like, angular, widest at the tips and narrowing to the bases, about 0.7 mm long, lacking tail-like appendages.
