General:
Perennial herb from stem-bases with short rhizomes or bulblets; flowering stem 1, 10-20 cm tall, glandular-hairy.
Leaves:
All basal, egg-shaped to occasionally diamond-shaped, 4-10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, coarsely and regularly toothed with 15 to 30 teeth, wedge-shaped to blunt at base, fringed, usually densely rusty-woolly below, stalks 4-8 cm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence terminal, usually open, of several clusters of flowers, flat-topped; petals white, pink or green, 1.5-3.5 mm long, egg-shaped, clawed, deciduous; calyces joined to the lower portion of the ovary, free hypanthium present, the lobes egg-shaped, 1-2.5 mm long, spreading, reddish-hairy; stamens 10.
Fruits:
Follicles, 3-6 mm long, greenish to reddish-purple; seeds brownish, about 0.7 mm long, wrinkled lengthwise.

Habitat / Range

Moist to dry rock outcrops in the lowland to alpine zones; frequent on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, rare on the adjacent mainland; S to WA, OR and CA.
