General:
Perennial herb from an egg-shaped bulb 2-3 cm long; flowering stems 30-50 cm tall, more or less compressed, 2-edged, smooth.
Leaves:
Basal leaves few to several, linear, erect, about as long as the stem, 6-13 mm wide, flat, glaucous, smooth, the margins entire; stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence usually of solitary, terminal, nodding, short-stalked flowers, the stalks issuing from a membranous tubular bract; flowers white, of 6 similar segments fused at the base into a 2.5-cm long tube that spreads to the broadly egg-shaped, spreading, overlapping tepals, the shallow cup-like crown (the corona, rising from between the segments and the stamens) several times shorter than the tepals, deep yellow or whitish, frilly and red-edged at the mouth; stamens 6; pistil 1, 3-chambered; ovaries inferior.
Fruits:
Capsules, triangular-egg-shaped, about 1.5 cm long; seeds several to many.
