General:
Perennial herb from slender rhizomes; stems erect, clustered, 15-35 cm tall, fine glandular-hairy to hairy.
Leaves:
Basal leaves nearly round, with heart-shaped bases, 2-6 cm wide, slightly shorter, indistinctly 5- to 7-lobed, round-toothed, long-stalked; stem leaves absent or of 1 or 2 membranous bracts.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a closely-flowered spike-like cluster of 10 to 20 flowers, blossoming upward, the flower stalks stout, 0.5-2 mm long; petals white to purplish-tinged, clawed, the blades 3-lobed, the lobes elliptic; calyces broadly bell-shaped, 1.5-3 mm long, joined to ovary for part of length; free hypanthium thinly gland-lined, somewhat spreading; calyx lobes 5, oblong to egg-shaped, erect to spreading, thin, whitish or purplish-tinged; stamens 5, opposite the calyx lobes.
Fruits:
Capsules; seeds black, veiny-pitted.
