General: Annual herb from a short taproot; stems erect, simple or branched, appressed stiff-hairy above, 30-70 cm tall.
Leaves: Basal leaves few, oblanceolate, divided into 3-4 pairs of primary lateral lobes, short-stalked, spreading stiff-hairy, 10-20 cm long; stem leaves similar, slightly reduced above.
Flowers: Inflorescence of solitary, terminal, erect flowers; buds nodding; flower stalks appressed stiff-hairy; petals 4, orange to red, rarely with a dark basal spot, 1-3 cm long.
Fruits: Capsules, narrowly egg-shaped, smooth, distinctly ribbed, 1.5-2 cm long.
