General: Perennial herb from a branched stem-base and a taproot; stems ascending to erect, numerous, long-hairy when flowering otherwise greenish, sparsely stiff-hairy to conspicuously or scarcely glandular, 10-25 cm tall.
Leaves: Basal leaves oblanceolate in outline, stalked, 5-10 cm long, coarsely pinnatifid or coarse-toothed, the lobes broadly oblong or lanceolate, sparsely stiff-hairy and conspicuously or scarcely glandular; stem leaves similar, alternate, slightly reduced, becoming unstalked and clasping upwards.
Flowers: Inflorescence a coiled, 1-sided, short, dense, terminal cluster; corollas blue-purple, deciduous, 5-9 mm long, hairy inside and out; calyces hairy, the lobes linear; stamens strongly exserted, 1.5-2.5 times as long as the corolla.
Fruits: Capsules, 2-chambered; seeds 8-18, black, oblong, pitted.
