Species Information
Summary: The combination of a dark blue to violaceous black subiculum, with a surface lighter in color is distinctive. Features include 1) resupinate growth on wood, 2) a fruitbody that is somewhat loosely constructed, becoming pelliculose, the spore-bearing area smooth and tan to pale brown, the subiculum dark blue or violaceous black, and the margin not determinable, 3) spores that are irregular to round or triangular, and pale yellowish to colorless, with bifurcate warts, 4) basidia with median simple septa, and 5) a dimitic hyphal system, with generative hyphae that are blue in water or brownish citrine in KOH, and somewhat thick-walled, and skeletal hyphae that are yellow and thick-walled, all hyphae without clamp connections.
Pseudotomentella nigra has been found in BC, ID, AB, ON, CO, and NY, (Ginns). It has also been found in Austria, Czechoslovakia, and France, (Larsen, M.J.(8)).
Fruiting body: annual, resupinate, effused up to 10cm x 5cm, up to 0.15cm thick, "somewhat loosely constructed, becoming pelliculose"; spore-bearing area continuous, tan to pale brown, smooth; margin not determinable, probably darker than the spore-bearing area and colored as the subiculum; "subiculum dark blue or violaceous black, fibrous"; "cordons present at the sterile margin", but obscure at 10x, (Larsen, M.J.(8))
Microscopic: SPORES 8-12 microns in diameter, mostly irregularly round, often round or becoming very irregular, when immature round or less frequently appearing roughly triangular, "warted, warts normally bifurcate", walls pale yellowish to colorless; BASIDIA 4-spored, 60-80(110) x 8-12 microns, distinctly spheropedunculate to napiform [turnip-shaped] when immature, clavipedunculate when mature, "simple-septate at the base, median simple septa present", sterigmata up to 8 microns long; HYPHAE dimitic; SUBHYMENIAL HYPHAE 2-3 microns wide, "pale blue in water and associated with a blue or bluish green diffusate in KOH", thin-walled, simple-septate; SUBICULAR HYPHAE of 2 types: 1) generative, 2-3(4) microns wide, "usually blue to bluish gray in water and brownish citrine in KOH, hyphae associated with a blue or bluish green diffusate in KOH", wall thickening apparent (often minutely spinulose), simple-septate, 2) skeletal, 1-2.5 microns wide, yellow, thick-walled, aseptate; CORDONS up to 150 microns wide, "yellowish brown with bluish tinges in water, bleaching slightly or some parts becoming blue to green in KOH", individual generative hyphae (1)2-3(4) microns wide, "often closely simple-septate, thick-walled", (Larsen, M.J.(8))
Other Pseudotomentella species in the Pacific Northwest do not have a dark blue to violaceous black subiculum, with a surface lighter in color, (Larsen, M.J.(4)).
