General:
Perennial herb from a thick, branched rhizome; mat-forming; stems erect, numerous, branched above, clustered, 5-35 cm tall, glabrous.
Leaves:
Stem leaves egg-shaped to elliptic or oblanceolate, succulent, reduced and scalelike below, larger further up the stem, 0.5-4 cm long, green to pinkish.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of terminal, umbrella-shaped clusters; petals 4, dark purple (female) or yellow (male); stamens longer than the petals.
Fruits:
Follicles, erect with spreading tips, red or purple.

Habitat / Range

Moist to mesic rocky cliffs, talus slopes and meadows in the lowland to alpine zones; common throughout BC; N to AK, YT and NT, E to AB and S to CO, NV and CA.
