General:
Dwarf, mat-forming shrub; stems prostrate to ascending, 5-30 cm long.
Leaves:
Alternate, evergreen or tardily deciduous, elliptic-oblong, 0.5-2 cm long, 0.2-0.8 cm wide, thick, scaly-glandular on both surfaces, tips blunt, dark green and wrinkled-looking above, brownish below, margins somewhat rolled under; stalks 2-3 mm long.
Flowers:
Showy, in few-flowered terminal clusters, fragrant; flower stalks 0.3-1.4 cm long, scaly-glandular; corollas deep purple, 8-12 mm long, 5-lobed; calyces persistent, 0.5-1.5 mm long, 5-lobed, fringed, dorsally scaly-glandular; stamens 5-10, filaments purple, glabrous; anthers rather short, oval.
Fruits:
Capsules, egg-shaped, 5-8 mm long, scaly-glandular.

Dry fell-fields and stony slopes in the alpine zone; infrequent in extreme N BC; circumpolar, N to AK, YT, and NT, and E to NF; Eurasia.
