General:
Perennial, with slender trailing stems and erect flowering branches; stems trailing, stolon-like, to 2 m long, often rooting at the nodes, short-hairy; flowering branches short, to 10 cm tall.
Leaves:
Alternate, deciduous,1 to 3 per flowering branch, long-stalked, simple, the blades heart-kidney-shaped, 2-6 cm wide, shallowly to deeply 3-lobed, the lobes rounded, double-saw-toothed, green on both surfaces, sparsely hairy above and on the veins beneath; stipules membranous, egg-shaped.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 1 or 2 long-stalked flowers atop short leafy shoots, the stalks not glandular; corollas white, the petals 5, broadly egg-shaped, 5-8 mm long, erect; calyces densely short-hairy, 5-lobed, the lobes lance-egg-shaped, 4-8 mm long, bent back; ovaries superior; stamens numerous, the filaments slender, not flattened.
Fruits:
Drupelets, densely short-hairy, few to several in a red hemispheric cluster; like a rudimentary raspberry, the berries about 1 cm wide.

Habitat / Range

Mesic to moist thickets and open forests in the montane and lower subalpine zones; rare in SW BC; S to N CA.
