General:
Short-lived perennial herb from a weak taproot and branching stem-base; tufted; stems erect, several, simple to 2- to 4-branched, glabrous, 5-20 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves linear to oblong, 5-15 mm long, less than 1 mm wide, 1-nerved, glabrous; stem leaves opposite, 2-6 pairs, up to 14 mm long, often with sterile axillary branches; stipules lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 2-7 flowers in a loose cluster, rarely solitary; petals 5, white, oblanceolate to oblong, 2-3.5 mm long; sepals 5, 3-nerved, margins translucent, egg-shaped, long-pointed or abruptly sharp-pointed, 3-4 mm long.
Fruits:
Capsules oblong, 3-4.5 mm long, usually 3-valved; seeds 0.5-0.8 mm long, black, finely roughened.
