General:
Perennial herb from a rhizome and often with a large, branched stem-base; stems one to several or many, erect to somewhat decumbent, (10) 20-70 cm tall, simple or loosely branched above; glabrous to sparsely soft-hairy, glaucous.
Leaves:
Basal leaves lacking; lower stem leaves mostly linear to linear-oblanceolate, 3-7 cm long, 1-4 (6) mm wide, from entire to remotely toothed to pinnately-cut with slender, linear, lateral lobes; middle and upper stem leaves reduced.
Flowers:
Few- to many-flowered racemes, elongate; flower stalks ascending, 6-12 mm long, expanded at summit; petals yellow, 6-10 mm long, spoon-shaped, narrowed gradually; sepals yellowish, 4-5 mm long.
Fruits:
Siliques, nearly erect, 2.5-6 cm long, about 1 mm wide, round in cross section, slightly alternately constricted and expanded, segments indistinctly nerved; beaks stout, nearly the diameter of silique, up to 1 mm long; seeds slightly over 1 mm long, about 0.5 mm in diameter, oblong, plump.

Habitat / Range

Dry grasslands and shrublands in the steppe zone; infrequent in SC BC; S to MT, NM and NV.
