General:
Perennial herb from a slender rhizome; stems erect, 10-45 cm tall, usually unbranched, not conspicuously bent or zigzag, sparsely fringed with hairs at the nodes.
Leaves:
Stem leaves several, narrowly egg-shaped to elliptic or lanceolate, 3-10 cm long, 1-4 cm wide, unstalked, tapering to a rounded, non-clasping base, shiny beneath, the margins fringed with short, tooth-like, irregularly spaced hairs; basal leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of usually single, stalked flowers nodding from leaf axils, the stalks 0.5-2 cm long, curved but not kinked, sparsely coarse-hairy; flowers usually rose-coloured with whitish tips, sometimes greenish-yellow tinged with purple, bell-shaped, of 6 similar, distinct tepals, the tepals 5-10 mm long, oblong-lanceolate, spreading slightly but not bent back at the tips; stamens 6; pistil 1, 3-chambered.
Fruits:
Berries, mostly globe-shaped, red, 5-9 mm wide; seeds several.

Habitat / Range

Moist to mesic forests, glades, streambanks, meadows and clearings in the lowland and steppe to subalpine zones; frequent throughout BC south of 56°N; N to AK, E to AB and S to OR. Description:
