General:
Perennial herb from a rhizome; stems erect, 20-70 cm tall, smooth.
Leaves:
Stem leaves 1 to 3, alternate, the basal and lower stem leaves stalked, 3- to 4-times 3-parted, the leaflets thick, circular to egg-shaped, 5-20 mm long, the tips 3- to 5-lobed, the lobes round-toothed, prominently veined and smooth or glandular-hairy below; stem leaves subtending panicle branches unstalked.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a many-flowered, narrow, terminal raceme, the bracts small, the flowers unisexual, male and female flowers on separate plants; flower stalks ascending; petals absent; sepals 4 (-6), greenish-white, lanceolate to broadly egg-shaped or elliptic, 2-4 mm long; stamens 10-20, the filaments coloured, not white, threadlike, 3-5.5 mm long, the anthers 2-3.5 mm long, blunt to pointy-tipped; stigmas usually yellowish.
Fruits:
Achenes, 5-17, erect to spreading, curved, elliptic-oblong, 3-4 mm long, round to slightly flattened, smooth to glandular, distinctly longitudinally veined, stalks 0.1-0.3 mm long; beaks 1.5-2.5 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Moist to mesic meadows, grassy slopes, thickets and open forests in the steppe and montane zones; frequent in BC east of Coast-Cascade Mountains; N to YT and NT, E to PQ and S to MN, WI, SD, WY and OR.
