General: Perennial or sometimes biennial, amphibious herb from a shallow creeping rhizome, smooth throughout, sometimes glandular; stems sprawling or decumbent to ascending, 10-60 (100) cm long/tall, rooting at the lower nodes, simple to much-branched at the base, somewhat fleshy, often purple-tinged.
Leaves: Opposite, mostly unstalked, somewhat clasping-based, lanceolate to oblong, 2-6 (9) cm long, 3-5 times as long as wide, entire or obscurely toothed.
Flowers: Inflorescences several long, rather narrow, lax, opposite, stalked racemes arising from the axils of upper leaves, the racemes of 15 to 25 stalked flowers, the flower stalks straight and spreading, 3-7 mm long, slightly shorter than the reduced, broadly lanceolate bracts; corollas white to pink with darker lines or pale blue, saucer-shaped, 4-5 mm across, irregularly 4-lobed, the lobes much longer than the short tube, the lowest lobe narrower than the others; calyces about 3 mm long, deeply 4-lobed, the lobes unequal, broadly lanceolate to egg-shaped; styles 1.3-2 mm long, exserted; stamens 2.
Fruits: Capsules, 2.5-3 mm long, a little wider than long, plump, somewhat globe-shaped, evidently notched at the tip; seeds numerous, flattened, 0.3-0.7 mm long.
