General:
Perennial herb from a shallow rhizome; stems erect or decumbent at the base, 5-20 cm tall, simple, thinly wavy-hairy and often also glandular, glandular-hairy in the inflorescence.
Leaves:
Opposite, unstalked, elliptic to egg-shaped, 1-2.5 cm long, entire, smooth.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a compact, terminal, bracted raceme of several stalked flowers; corollas deep blue-violet, saucer-shaped, 8-13 mm across, irregularly 4-lobed, the lobes much longer than the short tube, the upper lobe largest, the lowest lobe narrower than the others; calyces glandular-hairy, deeply 4-lobed, the lobes narrowly egg-shaped, unequal; styles 5-10 mm long, conspicuously exserted; stamens 2, exserted, the filaments 4-8 mm long.
Fruits:
Capsules, 4-6 mm long, a little longer than wide, flattened, heart-shaped, distinctly to scarcely notched at the tip, glandular-hairy; seeds numerous, flat, about 1 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Moist meadows and rocky slopes in the montane to alpine zones; infrequent in extreme SC BC; S to W MT, ID and CA.
