General:
Perennial from a rhizome, with stolons, plants 3-6 cm tall; stems lacking.
Leaves:
Basal leaves heart-shaped, the blades 1-3 cm long, 0.7-2.5 cm wide, nearly entire to round-toothed, smooth, the stalks 2-4 cm long; stem leaves lacking; stipules lanceolate, membranous, glandular-toothed.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of single, axillary flowers; petals 5, white, the lower petal 5-12 mm long including the 1- to 3-mm long spur, the lower 3 usually purple-pencilled, the lateral pair sometimes not bearded; sepals 5, lanceolate; style heads smooth.
Fruits:
Capsules, smooth, 5-9 mm long; seeds brown to nearly black.

Habitat / Range

Moist to wet streambanks, seepage sites, bogs and woodlands in the lowland and montane zone; frequent throughout BC, absent in NE BC and the Queen Charlotte Islands; N to NT, E to Labr. and NF and S to ME, NH, PA, GA, AL, MS, CO, UT, NV and CA.
