General:
Perennial herb from a large, thick, reddish taproot with a branched crown; stems ascending to erect, several, branched, 10-20 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves oblong-oblanceolate or widely egg-shaped, 10-20 cm long, 1-5 cm wide, narrowing to a thick stalk about 5 cm long; stem leaves lacking or with 1 or 2 reduced leaves below.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a loose, terminal raceme with 2-5 flowers on stalks 2-5 cm long; floral bracts linear, few; petals 7-9, salmon-coloured, yellowish-pink, sometimes white, egg-shaped, 2.5-4 cm long; sepals 2, 0.8-1 cm long; stamens 12-25.
Fruits:
Capsules, opening by 3 or 4 valves; seeds numerous, deep brownish-red, warty, 2 mm long.
