Species Information

Species description:
Gametophytes in olivaceous to red-brown mats or tufts with small suberect to erect shoots, usually unbranched, 1-3 cm long, leaves nearly equally acutely bilobed with sinus to 1/3 leaf length (sometimes lobes slightly overlapping), leaves close to distant, arching outward from transverse base, cells trigonous, smooth. Gemmae red, 2-celled, usually angled. Dioecious. Perianth cylindric, trigonous below puckered toothed mouth.
Comments:
Thi species need to be documented in British Columbia.
Similar Species:
Can be confused with A. saxicola but the usually unequally bilobed leaves of that species with the lobule on the upper surface, and absence of trigones in that species, are enough to separate them.

Habitat and Range

Habitat
Mainly on cliffs, usually siliceous, in usually well-drained sites.
Range
World Distribution

A circumpolar Northern Hermisphere species, mainly continental and absent from most coastal areas. Central Europe across boreal Asia to mountains of Japan. In North America also trans-continental, boreal and temperate, extending southward down mountains.

BC Distribution

A single collection in the Tatshenshini; reported from the province by Schuster (1969), but no location cited. Likely to be scattered in the northern and interior mountains of the province, since it is rarely coastal in its world range.
