Species Information

General:
Biennial herb from a fibrous root or rhizome; stems single to several, erect or ascending, 35-90 cm tall, bristly-hairy.
Leaves:
Basal leaves stalked, egg-shaped, hairy; stem leaves more linear, alternate, toothed, reduced upwards.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of terminal clusters of large, bell-shaped flowers; corollas 3.5-5 cm long, blue; calyces with a conspicuous appendage at each notch.
Fruits:
Capsules, 8-10 mm long, cylindric.

Habitat and Range

Mesic disturbed areas in the lowland zone; rare garden escape in coastal SW BC; introduced from Europe.
