General:
Perennial, tufted herb from short rhizomes; stems 30-60 cm tall, wine-red at the bases, shorter than the leaves.
Leaves:
Sheaths tight; ligules longer than wide; blades 2 or 3 per stem, sparsely hairy, borne on the lower 1/3 of the stem, 1.5-3 mm wide, the lower ones reduced.
Flowers:
Spikes 3 to 5, the terminal one linear, 1-2 cm long, with female flowers above, male flowers below, the lower spikes 2 to 4, egg-shaped, 1-2 cm long, 2-4 mm wide, with female flowers, the upper unstalked and approximate, the lower short-stalked and remote, erect to spreading; bracts subtending the female spikes leaflike, sheathless, as long as or longer than the inflorescence.
Fruits:
Perigynia egg-shaped, 1.8-2.5 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, yellowish-green, densely hairy, few-ribbed, triangular, blunt-tipped; beakless; female scales about as long as the perigynia, egg-shaped, lower ones long-pointed, upper ones pointed, greenish, the margins translucent; stigmas 3; achenes 3-angled, 1.4-1.8 mm long.
