General:
Perennial herb from rhizomes and fibrous roots; stems erect, 10-35 cm tall, smooth.
Leaves:
Long-stalked, ascending, usually twice 3-parted, the leaflets irregularly deeply to shallowly lobed, short-stalked, tips rounded and commonly minutely-notched with tiny gland at end of vein, smooth above, with a bloom beneath.
Flowers:
Inflorescence generally a solitary, terminal flower, occasionally a loose, 2-flowered, leafy cyme; petals absent; sepals 5 (-9), white, sometimes pink-tinged at tips, egg-shaped, 10-17 mm long, 7-11 mm wide; stamens 40-60; pistils 2-10.
Fruits:
Follicles, oblong, 11-15 mm long, 3- to 3.5-times longer than wide, upright to diverging; beaks 0.8-1.7 mm long; seeds reddish-brown, egg-shaped, 2-2.5 mm long, smooth.
