General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stems erect, 20-100 (200) cm tall, glabrous and peeling below, appressed short stiff-hairy and generally glandular-hairy above.
Leaves:
Alternate, generally deciduous early, linear to narrowly elliptic, 1-5 cm long, sharp-pointed, usually folded along midrib, more or less glabrous, often with bundles of smaller leaves in axils of leaves.
Flowers:
Inflorescence terminal, open, panicle-like; hypanthium 1.5-8 (16) mm long; petals 2-15 mm long, white to rose-purple, notched at tip; sepals 2-8 mm long; stamens less than or equal to length of pistil; stigmas club-shaped or occasionally 4-lobed.
Fruits:
Capsules, 1.5-3.5 cm long, glabrous or glandular; stalks 3-20 mm long; seeds 1.4-2.7 mm long, pimply, tuft of hair white, 7-8 mm long, readily detaching.

Habitat / Range

Dry shrublands, forest openings and disturbed areas in the lowland, steppe and lower montane zones; common in S BC, especially E of the Coast-Cascade Mountains; E to PQ and NB and S to CA.
