General:
Annual herb from a taproot, glandular-long-hairy and somewhat slimy throughout; stems decumbent to erect, 5-40 cm long/tall, simple or more often branched from near the base.

Leaves:
Opposite, stalked, triangular egg-shaped to broadly lanceolate, 1-5 cm long, coarse-toothed, 3- to 5-veined from the base, the margins fringed with long hairs.

Flowers:
Inflorescence of few to several long-stalked flowers in the axils of the leaves, the stalks slender, 5-15 mm long, spreading in fruit; corollas tubular funnel-shaped, 6-15 mm long, yellow, spotted with red, hairy at the throat within, scarcely 2-lipped, 5-lobed, the 2 lobes of the upper lip slightly longer, mostly erect, blunt to rounded; calyces cylindric, 4-8 mm long, to 10 mm in fruit, glandular-hairy at least on the ribs, 5-toothed, the teeth lanceolate, more or less equal; stamens 4, smooth.

Fruits:
Capsules, elliptic to egg-shaped, pointy-tipped, 3.5-5 mm long, included in the inflated calyces; seeds numerous, 0.3-0.4 mm long.
