General:
Perennial herb from a thick scaly rhizome and stout stem-base covered with remains of old leaves; stems erect, 5-30 cm tall, simple, tufted, sparsely spreading-hairy to long-soft-hairy.
Leaves:
Basal leaves numerous, short-stalked, erect to spreading, interruptedly pinnately divided, 4-12 cm long, the blades elliptic-oblong in outline, with 9 to 31 entire to 3- to 5-toothed main segments, the terminal segment similar to the lateral ones, from nearly smooth and greenish to silvery-silky or silvery-long-hairy; stem leaves alternate, several, much reduced.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 1 or 2 (to 4) terminal, erect flowers; corollas yellow, wheel-shaped, the petals 5, nearly circular, spreading, 6-12 mm long; calyces often purplish, 5-lobed, the lobes narrowly egg-shaped, 5-10 mm long, alternating with lanceolate bractlets 3-7 mm long; ovaries superior; stamens numerous, about 60.
Fruits:
Achenes, several to many in hemispheric heads; achenes narrowly spindle-shaped, coarse-hairy, the styles persistent, not much elongated, about as long as the achenes, straight, smooth.
