General:
Annual herb from a fibrous root; stems lax, simple or sparingly branched, 5-30 cm tall, glabrous or hairy on the leaf margins and angles of the stem.
Leaves:
Basal leaves lacking; stem leaves alternate, stalked, toothed, round to egg-shaped, 2-10 mm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of lax, solitary flowers borne opposite the leaflike bracts; calyx lobes leaflike, veiny, egg-shaped; corollas of upper flowers, tubular bell-shaped, blue, others abortive.
Fruits:
Capsules, short, opening by inconspicuous irregular pores near the base.
