General:
Perennial, tufted herb from short rhizomes; the stems erect, 3-20 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal, nearly circular in cross-section, tapered, lacking cross-walls.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a single, terminal head of usually 2 (or 3) flowers, the flowers lacking bractlets; perianth segments dark brown with lighter tips, 2.5-3 mm long, blunt, subequal; stamens 6; anthers 0.3-0.4 mm long, shorter than the filaments; bracts blunt, longer than the flowers.
Fruits:
Capsules, egg-shaped, notched, 1.5-2 times longer than the perianth segments, dark; seeds spindle-shaped, about 0.7-0.9 mm long, with short tail-like appendages at each end.
