Species Information

General:
Perennial, loosely tufted herb from fibrous roots; stems threadlike, usually submerged, 40-75 cm long, rooting at the nodes and often viviparous (producing plantlets in the inflorescence).
Leaves:
Located on the lower part of the stem, threadlike, the early leaves flaccid, usually submerged, with prominent cross-walls; sheaths open, with prominent, rounded, ear-shaped lobes.
Flowers:
Inflorescence terminal, 3-10 cm long, the heads with 2 or more flowers; perianth segments greenish-brown, 2.5-3 mm long, blunt or the outer ones pointed, the inner about the same length as the outer; stamens 6; anthers shorter than the filaments.
Fruits:
Capsules, blunt or notched, less than 1 mm longer than the perianth, brown; seeds about 0.5 mm long, egg-shaped, lacking tail-like appendages.

Habitat and Range

Lakes, ponds and peat bogs in the lowland zone; rare in SW BC; disjunct E to NF and NS and S to OR; Eurasia, N Africa; probably introduced in our area.
