Species Information

General:
Perennial, loosely tufted herb from short to elongate rhizomes; stems erect, 10-45 cm long, bluish-green.
Leaves:
Located on the lower parts of the stem, flat, lacking cross-walls.
Flowers:
Inflorescence terminal, 3-15 cm long, the branches spreading; perianth segments dark brown with greenish midribs and whitish margins, 2-3 mm long, rounded, the outer blunt with incurved or hooded tips, the inner about the same length as the outer; stamens 6; anthers 0.5-1 mm long, subequal to or 1-2 times longer than the filaments; lowermost bract as long as or longer than the inflorescence, the flowers each with 2 involucral bractlets.
Fruits:
Capsules, globe- to egg-shaped, rounded, distinctly longer than the perianth segments; seeds egg-shaped, 0.4-0.5 mm long, lacking tail-like appendages.

Habitat and Range

Wet depressions and lakeshores in the lowland and steppe zones; rare in SW and SC BC; introduced from Europe.
