General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stems slender, erect, simple or branched at the base, minutely hairy, 5-15 cm tall.
Leaves:
Opposite, unstalked, palmately cleft into 3 to 7 segments, 3-20 mm long, the segments linear to narrowly oblanceolate, fringed with bristly hairs, leaves of the inflorescence longer than those below and more densely fringed.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a compact, head-like, terminal cluster of several fragrant, nearly unstalked flowers; generally 1 flower open at a time; corollas pink-purple or white with a yellow eye, 12-30 mm long, the very slender tube abruptly spreading to five rounded or squared-off, 2- to 4-mm long lobes; calyces 5-10 mm long, the 5 teeth needle-like.
Fruits:
Capsules, 3-chambered; seeds several per chamber.

Habitat / Range

Mesic to dry, open, grassy places in the lowland zone; locally frequent on S Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands; S to CA.
