General:
Perennial herb from thick rhizome that is tuber-like near tip; stems erect, 20-80 cm tall, stiff, stout, simple or branched, 4-angled, spreading short-hairy.
Leaves:
Opposite, usually ascending, lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 2-10 cm long, 0.6-3.5 cm wide, narrowed to a rounded base, usually unstalked, glabrous or fine-hairy, margins coarsely but evenly toothed; uppermost leaves gradually to scarcely reduced.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of many head-like, axillary flower clusters; corollas tubular, 4-lobed, white, 3-5 mm long, slightly surpassing the calyces; calyx teeth 5, awl-like, pointed to short-awned.
Fruits:
Nutlets, 4 clustered together, 1.5-2 mm long, 1.4-1.8 mm wide, 3-angled, corky-thickened on edges, flat and often minutely toothed at the top.
