General:
Perennial herb from a thick rhizome, this covered with old leaf bases; stems erect, glabrous, 10-50 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves alternate, broadly heart- to kidney-shaped, 3-12 cm wide, blunt-toothed, stalked, the stalks 10-30 cm long; stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 5-30 flowers in an open, terminal cluster on naked stalks 10-50 cm long; corollas white, the petals joined at the base to form short tubes spreading into 5 lobes, these 5-6 mm long with wavy flanges on the midnerves and margins; calyces conic, 5-lobed.
Fruits:
Capsules, conic to egg-shaped, 10-18 mm long, 1-chambered; seeds glabrous, shiny.
