Species Information

General:
Parasitic herb from a coarse, tuber-like, fleshy root; stems single, short glandular-hairy, 7-20 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves lacking; stem leaves scaly-bracteate, alternate, short glandular-hairy.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of many flowers in dense, spikelike clusters; corollas purplish or pink striped with white, 1.5-2.2 cm long, the lips short, unstalked; calyces 7-12 mm long, the lobes 3-7 mm long, narrow, acute, equaling or slightly shorter than the tubes; anthers smooth.
Fruits:
Capsules; seeds numerous, angled, net-veined, less than 0.7 mm long.

Habitat and Range

Parasitic on Asteraceae (especially Artemisia) and others; grassland, shrublands and open forests in the montane zone; rare in SE BC, known only from Bull River; E to MB and S to IN, ND, NV and OR.
